What Does Excel Do

Adding up numbers is something most Excel users do every day. There are a number of ways to do this in Excel, and some of them are more efficient than others. In this lesson you'll learn how to use the SUM function, as well as some handy tips for adding up columns, rows and tables of numbers lightning fast - which means you'll save time. Excel gives you a lot of formulas and formula-combos to do the same thing. It is best to identify and use the fastest ones. Here are a couple of examples: Use IFERROR instead of IF and ISERROR combo (unless you are using Excel 2003 or earlier, which does not have IFERROR). The Excel CEILING function rounds a number up to a given multiple. The multiple to use for rounding is given as the second argument (significance). If the number is already an exact multiple, no rounding occurs. ...
The core of this formula is the COUNTA function, configured with an expanding range like this:COUNTA($B$5:B5)As the formula is copied down the column, the range starting with B5 expands to include each new row, and...
Working from the inside out, we first 'normalize' row numbers to begin with 1 using the ROW function and an offset:ROW()-offsetIn this case, the first row of data is in row 5, so we use an offset of 4:ROW()-4...

The key to solving this problem is to realize that the solution requires a specific kind of rounding. We can't just round to the 'nearest' .45 or .95 value. In fact, the first step is to round up to the nearest half...
MROUND rounds to nearest values based on a supplied multiple. When you supply '0:15' as the multiple, Excel internal converts 0:15 into 0.0104166666666667, which is the decimal value that represents 15 minutes, and...
In the example, cell C6 contains this formula:=MROUND(B6,5)The value in B6 is 17 and the result is 15 since 15 is the nearest multiple of 5 to 17.Other multiplesAs you'd expect, you can use MROUND to round to...

At the core of this solution is the RAND function, which is used to generate a random number in a helper column (column C in the example). To assign a full set of random values in one step, select the range C5:C16,...

QUESTION

What’s the deal?

What Does Excel Do

ANSWER

Nothing.

What Does Vlookup In Excel Do

People who grew up with Lotus notes got into the habit of starting a formula with ‘+’ and they carried it over to Excel.

What excel does with that is simply add ‘=’ to the front and you end up with formulae that can look like:

=+INTERCEPT(C6:C10,B6:B10)

This is drastically different from seeing a double-minus (technically called ‘double unary’) in a formula. The double-unary returns 1 or 0 instead of ‘TRUE’ or ‘FALSE.’

What Does Excel Do On A Computer

An Excel formula that starts with =+ is nothing. It’s an old habit that Lotus Notes users have for starting a formula.

Erika, there’s nothing to worry about. Whether a formula starts with = or =+ the answer is going to be the same. Just keep on movin’ and keep your data clean!
