1) Do you have an anti-virus program installed on your computer?
Lots of games have problems with overprotective anti-virus programs. If you are using anti-virus please make sure Stronghold Crusader 2 has been added to your list of exceptions. Please consult your anti-virus manual for instructions on how to do this. 2) Make sure you have installed the prerequisite files required to run Stronghold Crusader 2

3) Verify your Stronghold Crusader 2 files
- Login to the Steam client
- Within Library, right-click on Stronghold Crusader 2 and select Properties
- Select the Local Files tab and click the Verify Integrity of Game Cache... button.
- Steam will check all the game files were downloaded correctly. This process may take several minutes. If any files are missing Steam will download them the next time you run the game.
4) Delete your Stronghold Crusader 2 initialisation file
Locate your C:Users[User]DocumentsStronghold Crusader 2Profiles folder and delete options.xml. This will force Stronghold Crusader 2 to redetect your computer settings again when loading the game.
5) Use the Windows System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted Windows system files
System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files. This article describes how to run the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to scan your system files and to repair missing or corrupted system files.
6) If the game still does not run, check your Options Override file
- Open the your installed game path by right-clicking on Stronghold Crusader 2 in Steam, going to Properties > Local Files > Browse Local Files...
- Go to the directory binwin32_release and open the file 'options_override.xml'
- Following the instructions in the file, enter a path to a new directory in which you will save game options (for example, edit the line to <override user_data_path='C:UsersusernameDesktopOptions' />
- Save the file and then try running Stronghold Crusader 2.

Firefly Stronghold Crusader

This only applies to Stronghold Crusader HD on Steam
Some players have reported that the game does not allow them to load and save games properly. This appears to be because the game cannot access their DocumentsStronghold Crusader folder, possibly due to security software installed on the computer. As a result we have included a method to allow players to change the folder in which Stronghold Crusader stores all options, save games, maps etc.
1) Create a new folder on your computer where you would like your Stronghold Crusader options, saves and maps to the stored e.g. C:GamesFirefly
2) Browse to C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonStronghold Crusader Extreme
3) Edit the configpath.txt file using a text editor such as Notepad or Notepad++
4) Add the path to the new folder to line 1 in configpath.txt
5) Save the file
Next time you run Stronghold Crusader a new 'Stronghold Crusader' directory will be created in the folder specified e.g. C:GamesFireflyStronghold Crusader
WARNING:Be very careful! The game will attempt to read and write files from the specified directory. Use at your own risk!
To revert back to using the the default folder in /Documents, either delete the folder path in configpath.txtor delete theconfigpath.txtfile itself
IMPORTANT:We strongly suggest only using this override if absolutely necessary, in cases which the default directory cannot be used. If you have no issues with saving any options/progress/save games with Stronghold Crusader, do not use this override option.
PLEASE NOTE:Steam Cloudwill NOTwork if you use an override path. Steam Cloud only works with the DocumentsStronghold Crusader folder.
